FAQs
Who is the target audience for the walking retreat?
Curious and fun women ages 21 - 101 :)
Do I need to train for this walking retreat?
No, you should not need to train for this event. However, it is expected that you are able to walk unassisted for 4-5 miles (~10,000 steps) over the course of 6 hours. There will be several stopping points throughout the day so it will not feel like one continuous hike. The trails range from flat paved or gravel surfaces to slightly rugged (but well traveled) forest paths with moderate inclines with a few tree roots and/or branches to cross.
Where and when will we meet up to start the day?
Please arrive at 10:00am. We'll meet just outside the main doors of the Gwinnett Environmental & Heritage Center building.
What should I bring?
The average temperature in Buford in late September is in the mid-70's, but you'll want to check the local weather to ensure that you will be comfortable for the entire day. Please wear trail walking shoes and bring a refillable water bottle, small backpack or fanny pack with bottle holder, a small journal or notepad, and a pencil or pen. Pop up afternoon showers may occur in GA this time of year, so consider packing a travel rain poncho. You may also want to bring a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen.
What about food and refreshments?
We'll be serving lunch around 1pm and we'll provide healthy snacks in the morning and mid-afternoon. We'll also have plenty of water on hand to refill water bottles. We are very excited about our caterer, Chef Ned with J&J Culinary Sensations, which is the only 100% green catering company in Gwinnett County. Chef Ned prepares, cooks and serves everything fresh to order with locally sourced, high quality organic ingredients. He has a core philosophy of buying from and supporting local, organic farmers reinforcing his commitment to giving back to the community. There's no doubt you will be well nourished and refreshed for this day journey!
Are there bathrooms?
Yes, the Gwinnett Environmental & Heritage Center building is centrally located among all the trails and has a large, air-conditioned indoor restroom. In addition, there is an indoor restroom towards the south end of the trails we'll be walking, plus there are portable toilets on the northern trails.
What if it rains?
We will hold the retreat rain or shine! The good news is that there are several covered pavilions throughout the walking trails on the campus, so we can take cover if needed to wait out any heavy rain showers. Plus we can take shelter in the main indoor facility at the Gwinnett Environmental & Heritage Center if there's any severe thunderstorm activity.
What are my transportation / parking options
There is plenty of parking at the facility, but we encourage you to carpool to the event if you can!
